Last month. the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine released The Promise of Adolescence: Realizing Opportunity for All Youth, supported by the Funders for Adolescent Science Translation. The report calls for policies and practices to capitalize on the opportunities of adolescence and address inequities—in education, health care, and other areas—that undermine the well-being of many young people at this critical period of development.

Policy Recommendations to Integrate SEL into Teacher Prep Programs

CASEL and the Committee for Children released a set of policy recommendations and hosted a Congressional briefing in February to highlight the need to integrate SEL into teacher preparation programs. Among the recommendations: inclusion of SEL into the Higher Education Act reauthorization, development of statewide standards for educator SEL preparation, and support of micro-credentialing that incorporates SEL content.

In a paper describing the results of an RCT, the Boston Charter Research Collaborative reports that 6th graders who participated in eight weeks of mindfulness instruction reported less perceived stress and demonstrated improvements in sustained attention. Remaking Middle School: An emerging coalition of funders, researchers and practitioners is focused on increasing attention and investment in the middle school years. New York Life Foundation, Altria Group, the Youth-Nex Center at the UVA Curry School of Education and Human Development, and the Association for Middle Level Education (AMLE) collaborated with Gallup to host the Remaking Middle School Summit in February 2019.
