Brain Science and Education Policy & Practice

The Brain Science Is In: Students’ Emotional Needs Matter: What the neuro-, cognitive, and behavioral research says about social-emotional learning. This EdWeek post by Jim Shelton of the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative highlights new studies on the science of learning and development released earlier this year by the CZI-supported Science of Learning and Development Initiative (SoLD).

SoLD is a multi-disciplinary effort focused on elevating the use of scientific evidence in education practice and policy to advance equity so that all children have access to learning environments that:

Are academically rigorous and rich, acknowledging the unique learning needs and strengths of each child;
Promote integrated development that takes into account students’ academic, social, emotional, relational, identity, and contextual factors;
Foster deep relationships and physical and emotional safety; and
Provide comprehensive supports, including to buffer the effects of adversity on learning and development.

The Commission recently released School-Community Partnerships: Joining Forces to Support the Learning and Development of All Students, the third in a series of case studies. This case study highlights the Tacoma Whole Child Initiative in particular. By All Means Consortium. The Education Redesign Lab at Harvard Graduate School of Education launched By All Means in February 2016 to test its theory that meeting the complex array of children’s needs and developing their interests and talents requires a system-wide approach.

The pilot cities include Louisville, KY; Oakland, CA; Providence, RI; and Salem, Somerville, and Newton MA. In April the consortium released Building City-Wide Systems of Opportunity for Children: Initial Lessons from the By All Means Consortium. Supported by the Oak Foundation.

July 9, 9:00AM-3:00PM. National Funder Strategy Session: From Walkouts to Power: Youth of Color as a Moving Force for Change. Presented by the Funders’ Collaborative for Youth Organizing. Attendees will:
- - Hear lessons learned from young people of color who have been on the forefront of this movement, connecting the symptoms of violence to root causes of injustice.
  - Learn from youth organizing leaders about what it will take to move beyond effective actions, beyond voter engagement, to a full realization of community power.
  - Engage with FCYO staff and youth organizing funders in discussions and activities with the goal of amplifying and and sustaining powerful youth-led change for communities of color.
