Reports on survey findings from 4,000 parents, teachers, principals and superintendents, with over eight in 10 teachers (83%), parents (82%), superintendents (82%), and principals (83%) saying it is equally important to assess both academic skills and nonacademic skills such as teamwork, critical thinking, and problem-solving.  The authors call for a specific focus on the cultural adaptations of nonacademic skills for those from diverse backgrounds.  By NWEA and Gallup, August 2018.

Writing in the August Pioneering Monthly Kelly Young of Education Reimagined challenges all of us to rethink our high expectations for young people, pointing out that they create a “finite realm of possibility based on adults’ expectations of what a child can and should be and do.”

In a June post for EdWeek, Arina Bokas and Robert Ward explore the limits of “growth mindset,” arguing that it’s a “benefit mindset” we should be encouraging in young people: “What makes the benefit mindset different is that its redefinition of success moves the concept of mutual advantage to the forefront of learning. We know student engagement increases achievement, but engagement inspired by altruism increases purpose-driven and practical learning opportunities.”
