Dear colleagues,

At year’s end, GTY’s Steering Committee convened in Seattle to explore how philanthropy can better leverage our resources to build equitable learning environments where all children have opportunities to thrive.

We joined a powerful asset-framing session led by Trabian Shorters of BMe Community, where we began to learn about the unintended consequences of framing people and populations by their problems; and how to shift the emphasis to accomplishments and aspirations.

We convened a cross-sector conversation to explore the role of philanthropy in advancing fieldbuilding while centering equity, and we talked frankly with a group of powerful youth leaders from SOAR and FEEST who challenged us to better integrate youth voice in our work.

A new Penn State brief argues that principals’ social and emotional competence is a key factor for creating caring schools and calls for new professional development and coaching for principals on mindfulness practices, emotional intelligence and systems thinking. The brief also calls for policy changes including embedding SEL competencies in licensure, improving principal preparation programs and decreasing principal turnover. Updating its initial 2017 brief, CASEL released survey results detailing the SEL perspectives of 710 principals (representing K-12). Highlights: principals continue to see SEL as a priority and highly teachable; more schools are implementing SEL benchmarks and assessing SEL skills; and most principals believe a formal curriculum is required to teach SEL skills. Oakland’s African American Male Achievement (AAMA) Program Decreases Dropout Rate

An October 2019 report by the Stanford Center for Education Policy Analysis shows the African American Male Achievement (AAMA) program in Oakland, CA, part of the My Brother’s Keeper Challenge, decreased the dropout rate for Black male students by 43%. AAMA features classes exclusively for Black male students taught by Black male teachers who focus on social-emotional training, African-American history, culturally relevant pedagogy, and academic supports. In September, New Schools Venture Fund published an Insight Brief about their work with Transforming Education to focus on 7 social emotional competencies and 7 culture/climate factors in their portfolio of schools. Two insights: Growth mindset and perceptions of school safety were most strongly associated with academic performance; and sense of belonging was not correlated with academic outcomes. The brief sparked a column by Fordham Institute’s Chester Finn warning the field: Don’t Oversell SEL and a response by New School Venture Fund CEO Stacey Childress. One takeaway: both agree that SEL assessments do not belong in accountability frameworks.
