Be Her Resource: A Toolkit About School Resource Officers and Girls of Color
[/fusion_text][fusion_text]
By the the National Black Women’s Justice Institute and Georgetown Law’s Center on Poverty and Inequality. More than 30,000 police officers work in U.S schools, up from 100 in the 1970s; and girls of color are nearly 4 times as likely to be arrested at school than white girls. Based on focus groups and interviews with school-based police and girls of color, this report provides specific recommendations for school districts and police departments to improve school-based safety and social-emotional supports for girls of color. Fall 2017.

Early next month, Funders’ Collaborative for Innovative Measurement (FCIM) will convene 80+ principal investigators of Institute for Education Sciences research projects. On the agenda? Exploring how FCIM can help catalyze connections among researchers, and building on existing work toward a national research and innovation hub to develop measures of interpersonal and intrapersonal competencies. In response to the political climate unleashed by the 2016 elections, Youth on Board developed ListeningWorks to help movement builders and community leaders incorporate healing and support into the DNA of their organizations and communities. The project’s action and support model is based on peer counseling, restorative justice and social emotional learning. ListeningWorks recently received a grant from the Einhorn Family Charitable Trust’s Helping People Get Along Better Fund to launch a national community engagement effort.

Last month, 2017 National Teacher of the Year Sydney Chaffee of the Codman Academy Charter Public School in Boston authored a blog post for Transforming Education titled Balancing the Brain and the Heart, describing a visit to a sixth grade algebra classroom in Tacoma as part of the NCSEAD convening. Chaffee describes how students showed her that doing ‘emotional work’ in peer groups helps them succeed academically and build community.

“The field is complicated by too many potential skills and constructs with considerable overlap. Educators want clarity on the many social and emotional constructs, and they want these constructs aligned within a framework for a young person’s developmental progression throughout the school years.” — Jacqueline Jodl, NCSEAD director, in a Nov. 29, CASEL blog: It’s Time to Bring Research on Learning Together with Practice.
