Teacher Stress and Health: Effects on Teachers, Students, and Schools

[/fusion_text][fusion_text]

School climate and culture, and teachers own’ social emotional competence are key drivers of stress experienced by 46% of U.S. teachers every day.  Stress compromises teachers’ health, sleep, quality of life, and job performance, and can be mitigated in part by implementing programs that focus on student behavior and SEL in the classroom.  This brief is one in a series on SEL published by Penn State University.  Supported by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.  September 2016.

The Role of Families in Supporting Social and Emotional Learning

[/fusion_text][fusion_text]

This brief examines how effectively supporting families as a context for SEL requires understanding the values and beliefs each family brings to their ways of being. Look for the table on p. 3 offering specific examples of how parents can move beyond implicit socialization to intentional family socialization, defined as “learning experiences designed to explicitly teach children the knowledge and skills they need to become self-reliant and make appropriate choices independently.”  By the University of Minnesota Extension, partially funded by Youthprise. February 2017.

Barriers to Success: Moving Toward a Deeper Understanding of Adversity’s Effects on Young People

[/fusion_text][fusion_text]

Four million young people in the U.S. have three or more adverse life experiences during their adolescence – including economic hardship, domestic or neighborhood violence, and parental incarceration. A new report by the Center for Promise examines race/income-based disparities in whether and how a young person experiences adversity and offers recommendations for mitigating the impact of ALEs on young people. March 2017. Supported by Target.
