Supporting Students’ College Success: The Role of Assessment of Intrapersonal and Interpersonal Competencies

By the National Academy of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, is a consensus study report focused on how competencies such as self-management and positive self-evaluation are related to persistence and success in undergraduate education.  The report calls for increased governmental and foundational investment in research on assessment of these competencies.  Funded by the National Science Foundation and the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation.  Sept. 2017.

The Adolescent Science Translation Funder Collaborative is coordinating and aligning a set of investments over the next five years in four key areas:

  1. Funding a definitive synthesis of the growing body of research on adolescent development
  2. Developing better message frames in talking about adolescents;
  3. Creating a hub for this science and messaging and aligning communications efforts to help amplify the work;
  4. Accelerating innovative interventions, as well as systems and policy change, all grounded in the science of adolescent development.

With support from FCIM, the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) is launching a study to measure social and emotional skills in 10 and 15 year-old students in up to 12 cities or countries worldwide.  The 3-year study begins this school year and will focus on five major domains: emotional regulation, engaging with others, collaboration, task performance, and open mindedness.  FCIM welcomes additional funding partners for the project.
