Shareefah N. Al’Uqdah, PhD

Director of Training and Associate Professor, Counseling Psychology Program

Shareefah N. Al’Uqdah, PhD, has a long-standing commitment to improving the lives of minorities through mental health initiatives. At North Carolina Central University, she found her passion for psychology, earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees. Following NCCU, she attended and graduated from Howard University with a Ph.D. in Counseling psychology.

Continuing her tenure at Howard, she serves as the Director of Training and Associate Professor in the APA accredited Counseling Psychology program. Dr. Shareefah not only educates future psychologists, but she also conducts national and international workshops for educators, professionals, and community members. Her published research examines issues that impact urban families, urban schools, and African American Muslims. She has received over two million dollars in grant funding to help decrease mental health disparities within underserved communities.

Outside of the academia, Dr. Shareefah serves as the Founder & Chief Executive Officer of Your Neighborhood Clinic, a not-for-profit that provides low cost and insurance-based mental health services. As a loving wife and mother of four wonderful sons, Dr. Shareefah affectionally coined Your Neighborhood Psychologist on social media to highlight her commitment to healing every hood through mental health awareness.

Celeste Malone, PhD, MS

Associate Professor and Coordinator of School Psychology Program

Celeste Malone, PhD, MS, is an associate professor and coordinator of the school psychology program at Howard University. She received her MS in school counseling from Johns Hopkins University, her PhD in school psychology from Temple University, and completed a postdoctoral fellowship in child clinical and pediatric psychology at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.

Her research addresses development of multicultural competence through education and training, diversification of the profession, and the relationship between culturally responsive practice and PK-12 student outcomes.

Dr. Malone serves on the National Association of School Psychologists Board of Directors as the strategic liaison for the social justice strategic goal and is an elected member of the American Psychological Association Board of Educational Affairs.

Elizabeth Ricks, PhD

Assistant Professor, Department of Human Development and Psychoeducational Studies

Elizabeth Ricks, PhD, is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Human Development and Psychoeducational Studies at Howard University. She currently teaches courses that focus on youth placed at risk and resiliency, parent-child relationships, and research methods.

Dr. Ricks’ research focuses on classroom contextual factors that contribute to the development of self-efficacy, approaches to learning and mathematics achievement in young children. Dr. Ricks earned a PhD in Educational Psychology with a concentration in Educational Policy from Howard University.

Dr. Ricks is currently working on a project that examines within-group variation in social-emotional and cognitive development among African American kindergarten boys.
