WEBINAR:  GTY’s inaugural web seminar for funders examined the history of social/emotional learning in U.S. education policy and practice, eliciting useful lessons for the current moment and focusing on the intersections among SEL, academic achievement and educational equity.

With an eye toward implications for grantmaking, we talked with our expert panelists about key policies and practices essential to ensuring all young people have opportunities to develop their social and emotional competencies. We kept the conversation grounded in the everyday reality of schools, communities and young people, and wrapped by identifying potential next steps for grantmakers interested in this vital conversation.

Allison Brown

Executive Director, Communities for Just Schools Fund

Allison Brown became the executive director of the newly formed Communities for Just Schools Fund in 2015, a national donor collaborative providing financial support to local groups across the country that are organizing advocates for young people. Brown earned her bachelor’s degree at Howard University and her law degree at Harvard University. After working as a law clerk and then as an associate at Crowell & Moring in Washington, she joined the Civil Rights Division of the U.S. Justice Department where she investigated and prosecuted cases aimed at ensuring equal educational opportunities for all students and challenging the “school-to-prison pipeline.” After six years at the Justice Department, Brown left to open her own consulting firm and then joined the Open Society Foundations in 2013, where she was responsible for that philanthropy’s efforts to eliminate racial profiling and disproportionate student discipline.
